Big Brother finale expected to pull in over 9m viewers

LONDON – The 'Big Brother' finale is set to make ratings history as the most watched Channel 4 programme in five years, with audiences expected to be well over the 9m mark.

It is expected to beat the highest rating of 9.4m for the 2000 and 2002 finale shows when Craig Phillips and Kate Lawler won the competitions respectively.

Chicken Stu's eviction on Wednesday night managed 7.1m viewers, or a 39% share, while Big Brother 5's opening episode garnered 7.2m or a 37% share.

'Big Brother' finales have always been the biggest ratings puller. Even flop 'Big Brother 4', when bible bashing fisherman Cameron won the show, managed 6.6m, a 34% audience share.

With audiences this year climbing on previous years, the bar is set to rise even higher than 9.4m.

Overall ratings figures for the entire series reveal 'Big Brother 3' was most popular with an average of 5.8m viewers.

'Big Brother 5' is next up with an average 4.9m viewers, or 24% audience share.

'Big Brother 1' was third most-watched series with 4.7m, while 'BB4' and 'BB2' tied in fourth place with 4.6m viewers.

There has been a 10% increase in 16- to 34-year-old viewers and 5% increase in ABC1 adults watching 'Big Brother 5' this year.

A total of 12 shows had more than 6m viewers and 42 shows attracted more than 5m viewers this year. In comparison, 'Big Brother 4' had a total of 19 shows with 5m and over.
