Ben & Jerry's in youth initiative

Ben & Jerry's is to roll out a scheme in the UK to help disadvantaged young people gain skills and employment.

The initiative will see the ice-cream maker open PartnerShops, which are traditional Ben & Jerry's outlets operated by organisations that employ and train socially-excluded young people.

The scheme has run in the US since 1988, where there are 16 such outlets.

The first PartnerShop in Britain will open in Aberdeen in November. It will be run in conjunction with the Aberdeen Foyer, an organisation providing housing and training for 16- to 25-year-olds.

Not-for-profit organisation CrescoTrust runs Ben & Jerry's PartnerShops in Belfast and Londonderry in Northern Ireland.

This summer, Ben & Jerry's sponsored a festival on Clapham Common in South London. Proceeds from ticket sales went toward revamping the common's bandstand.
