The free kick logo will appear on selected Adidas products that the sportswear firm will announce later this year as part of a strengthening of the relationship between Adidas and arguably the world's most famous footballer.

The small black-and-white logo, one arm outstretched for balance, his right leg drawn back ready to kick, is worth millions. Last year alone Beckham earned 拢8.7m from commercial rights with 拢6.6m coming from non-football related work.

The idea behind the logo, Beckham said, is that it is instantly recognisable and something that people will be able to relate to.

"The logo is totally me and something that people can relate to. The image of me taking a free kick is world renowned and instantly recognisable. I am proud to have worked with Adidas to develop it," Beckham said.

Adidas hopes that by extending its relationship further with Beckham it will be able to significantly boost its annual sales of 拢4.3m and do for it what Michael Jordan did for Nike in the late 80s and early 90s.

Herbert Hainer, chairman and CEO of Adidas, said: "The contract extension and the new logo will strengthen Adidas' leadership in football. Both the Adidas brand and David Beckham are looking forward to expanding our relationship, using the new logo across our business for many years to come."

Hainer added that Beckham was a perfect fit for the Adidas brand. Recently the Madrid player appeared alongside old footage of Muhammad Ali and with other more recent sporting heroes Zinedine Zidane and sprinter Maurice Greene in a 拢27.1m global advertising campaign.
