Bebo revamps as it takes on new rivals

Bebo, the social networking site, has been revamped as it fights an increasingly competitive battle with rivals such as MySpace, Piczo and Facebook.

The updated site has several new features, including a personalised home page and a service that alerts users when their network of connections have updated their profiles.

The service, 'ch-ch-changes', allows users to see which areas of their friends' profiles have been updated, including new photos, blog updates, video content or a new poll.

Links to all friends' profiles have been added to the left-hand side of the home page, while updates to profiles are detailed on the right.

Michael Birch, CEO and co-founder of Bebo, said: 'We have been careful not to over-engineer, and to respect the community by not becoming invasive - only highlighting things that were public before.

'The new home page takes advantage of all the media available on Bebo and enhances the multimedia experience with greater functionality and increased accessibility.'

Bebo had also rolled out a new ad model, allowing users to choose the types of ads they see. The service allows users to choose from 15 categories of ads and opt in to receive email marketing that is relevant.
