Previously, Bebo worked with online sales house eType, with vice-president of business development and sales Jim Scheinman overseeing the operation as part of his global role. The relationship with eType will continue, a spokesman said, although Charkin is charged with recruiting his own sales team.
Bebo is the second most searched-for brand in the UK, according to research company Hitwise, and had a unique audience of 3.2 million in August.
Prior to Bebo, Charkin's role led MSN's pan-regional sales business. He spent five years at MSN, during which time the EMEA sales team grew from two to a 24-strong team.
After the launch of the EMEA sales team, the same model was followed in Asia, Latin America and the US.
