The title was previously published by Forward Publishing, which handles six other titles for Tesco. On The Road is published quarterly with a printrun of more than 350,000.
While BBC Magazines already publishes customer titles for two charities, the Royal Opera House's About The House and a monthly title for the South Bank arts complex, the Tesco win is its first in the commercial sector.
Peter Phippen, managing director of BBC Magazines, said that the company had ambitious plans to increase its presence in the customer magazine marketplace.
"As the third-largest consumer magazine publisher and one of the fastest growing, we have the knowledge and expertise to produce excellent magazines for those partners with whom we have particular empathy or share a cultural synergy. We also believe integrity is an important part of this business and is something that we have to offer," he said.
On The Road is distributed through Tesco cafes and petrol forecourts, and is designed to raise awareness of its financial products and services, including motor insurance. It covers a broad range of driving-related issues and includes celebrity interviews.
