BBC Worldwide doubles profits

BBC Worldwide, the commercial wing of the corporation, has unveiled a massive 50% leap in profits for 2004-05, on the back of strong sales of programming such as the Strictly Come Dancing brand to the US.

The corporation said the BBC Worldwide had increased profits to 拢55m during the reporting period following other successful efforts to distribute programmes and the sales of DVDs.

Highlights included the massive enthusiasm for the first series of hit comedy Little Britain, which sold 1.3 DVDs in 2004.

The portfolio of BBC Magazines also unveiled a solid 8% increase in circulation year-on-year.

Mark Thompson, director-general of the BBC, said: 鈥淭his success reflects Worldwide's ability to create products and services which people in the UK enjoy.

鈥淚nternationally, BBC Worldwide鈥檚 channels and publishing activities are an important showcase for the best of UK culture and creativity.鈥
