The magazine publisher will sell a travel-sized A5 issue exclusively at WHSmith during the summer months, with the first issue of the magazine, its May edition, going on sale on 22 April.
The BBC claims this is the first car title to launch a compact version. It will be sold initially in May, June, July and August.
Separately, BBC Magazines is testing the launch of a children's version of Top Gear aimed at eight to 12-year-olds.
That title could launch nationwide next year.
Press buyers were briefed last week about the title, which is being tested in the Scottish Borders and the west of England.
A feature of the magazine, according to sources, is that it will offer children the chance to collect car cards themed around The Stig, the anonymous racing driver on the Top Gear TV show.
A spokesman for BBC Magazines said: "This is a potential new product and we look forward to the results."
The launch of the new children's title follows BBC Magazines's closure of three of its magazines, Tweenies, Balamory and Amy.
The publisher is due to launch another children's title in the summer. Waybuloo will be aimed at three to five-year-olds.
According to the Audit Bureau of Circulations, Top Gear recorded its 12th consecutive circulation increase in the period from July to December last year, achieving a figure of 200,756 copies.
