BBC unveils five new radio stations

The BBC is to launch five new digital radio stations, to supplement Radios 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 and the World Service.

The services will be aimed at audiences that are currently under-catered for, with a black music and news-based station aimed at young people, a service that draws on the network's archive of the last thirty years, and a spoken word offering for young families. There will also be two enhancements of existing services - 5 Live Sports +, which will extend the coverage available on Radios 4 and 5, and an Asian network.

The new and existing services will be available via digital radio, the internet, satellite and cable. If licence fee payers and the Secretary of Culture, Media and Sport approve the BBC's plans, the first new service could start broadcasting in Spring 2001.
