BBC Two focuses on marginalised white working class

LONDON - BBC Two is to focus on marginalised sections of the white working class in its winter and spring line-up, headlined by drama 'White Girl' starring Anna Maxwell Martin.

Against a backdrop of a resurgent far right, BBC Two is asking why some sections of the white working-class population feel under siege.

The season's headline drama is 'White Girl', written by Abi Morgan who was behind BBC Two's 'Tsunami: The Aftermath' and 'Sex Traffic', and stars Anna Maxwell Martin ('Bleak House').

'White Girl' focuses on an 11-year-old girl, Leah, and her family's relocation to an entirely Muslim community in Bradford and her feeling of isolation, which is heightened at school when she discovers that she and her siblings are the only white children.

But Leah views the Muslim culture and faith with innocent fascination, finding a refuge of calm and safety, which is in sharp contrast to the pain and sadness at home.

Roly Keating, controller of BBC Two, said: "It's BBC Two's role to reflect contemporary society and this is a timely moment for us to examine the roots of this debate. The White season is a complex look at how life has changed for the white working class in Britain. It will enable the audience to consider the views and circumstances of people who have a strong point of view and join in the debate, both online with the BBC and in their own homes and communities."

BBC Two will also air documentary 'Last Orders', which tells the story of the embattled Wibsey Working Men's Club in the city of Bradford. Another documentary 'All White in Barking' looks at prejudices in a multi-cultural East London community.

Other highlights include drama 'From House of Saddam', telling the story of the murderous dictator's reign. It is the latest BBC/HBO co-production and tells the story of the opulent lifestyle of Saddam and his inner circle, set against a backdrop of war and the tragedies of the Iraqi people.

On a lighter note, there is new comedy in 'Taking the Flak', a caustic comedy about a news reporting team based abroad.

'Torchwood' returns with a host of guest stars including Richard Briers, Alan Dale ('Ugly Betty' and '24') and James Marsters of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and Angel' fame.
