BBC Three to launch in February

LONDON - The BBC has finally unveiled the launch date of its long-awaited youth channel BBC Three on Sunday February 9.

The news comes just a month after the broadcaster unveiled the channel's branding, following government approval for the channel in September to the dismay of the commercial broadcasting world.

Commercial broadcasters with rival youth programming networks have been lobbying the government to stop the BBC using licence-fee money to launch a channel into an already crowded market served by channels such as E4 and Sky One.

After a lengthy process and many changes to the BBC's original proposal, culture secretary Tessa Jowell finally gave the channel, which replaces BBC Choice, the green light.

Despite making a number of concessions, however, the channel has continued to make the headlines after reports emerged just two weeks ago that BBC Choice would carry 'Eastenders' before it was screened on terrestrial TV.

It is unlikely that the BBC will be allowed to get away with such controversial decisions as the channel is set to be reviewed two years after launch.

As Jowell approved the plans, she said: "I am determined BBC Three should be a distinctive public service channel that is not competing with what is already out there in a vigorous market place. The channel will be reviewed after two years to ensure this is the case."
