BBC targets US sites in online campaign

The BBC is launching an online marketing offensive during the US elections to drive traffic to its international bbcnews.com portal.

It will target websites where Americans typically search for news and has developed a digital campaign, 'World news, Global views', to boost awareness of its news services and improve perceptions of its journalism.

The online ads, created by Agency Republic, will appear on websites such as AOL, MSN, International Herald Tribune, Washington Post and Time magazine.

The ads will carry live news feeds from the BBC site in some of the creative executions, including an interactive overlay featuring a map of the world that allows the viewer to select BBC headlines by region.

The BBC has agreed an advertising deal with Reuters to broadcast Flash-animated ads and BBC-branded wallpaper on Reuters.com.

The campaign is intended to reflect the breadth and depth of bbcnews.com's coverage. Ongoing research will measure the traffic generated by the campaign and the BBC will also carry out research to measure brand perception.

BBC World Service appointed Agency Republic in August to promote bbcnews.com to new audiences. The BBC's websites attract 280m page impressions a month.
