The BBC was propelled by a good quarter for its national news and sport station Radio Five Live, which increased its share from 4.2% in the previous quarter to 4.6%.
The share of its other national stations was broadly unchanged, although Radio 1 and Radio 2 lost listeners. The former was down from 10.29m to 9.73m and the latter from 13.25m to 12.94m.
The network of BBC regional stations held an 11.1% share, but in commercial radio local listening fell back from 32.7% to 32.2%.
National and quasi-national commercial networks advanced, increasing their share from 10.1% to 10.5%.
Out of the three national commercial stations the focus was on Virgin Radio with the arrival of much-lauded breakfast show host Christian O'Connell in January. However, advertising failed to bring in new listeners, with the station's reach down slightly from 2.52m to 2.46m. Its share of listening was unchanged at 1.6%.
Classic FM also lost listeners, down from 5.91m to 5.71m, and its share fell back from 4.3% to 4.2%.
Compared with its BBC rival, TalkSport had an indifferent quarter with reach down from 2.18m to 2.07m and share down from 1.8% to 1.7%.
National commercial radio's growth came from the smaller stations but also from Emap's Magic, which boosted its share from 1.9% to 2.2% on the back of an increase in reach from 2.89m to 3.11m.
GCap's extension of its Xfm brand to Scotland was also a factor. The move took Xfm's share from 0.4% to 0.6% and its reach from 625,000 to 1.07m. New FM station Xfm Manchester began broadcasting in late March so its impact will not be seen until the next set of figures.
Chrysalis' Heart and Galaxy networks performed consistently, with Heart unchanged at 2.4% and Galaxy down slightly from 1.8% to 1.7%.
GCap's Century network was up from 1.1% to 1.2% and Guardian Media Group's Smooth network was unchanged at 0.9%.
