BBC One trials 8pm news bulletin

LONDON - BBC One is to trial a short news summary to be broadcast at 8pm, leading to speculation that the BBC is looking at its news strategy across its main channel.

Three versions will be tested, including a 60-second summary with national news, a longer 90-second version with national and regional news and weather and a 60-second version with both national and regional news.

The 60-second news summaries have been a feature of youth oriented entertainment channel BBC Three since it launched, giving updates at the top of the hour.

The pilot will run for four weeks in the Birmingham area starting from Wednesday May 9, with the service evaluated at the end of the trial period.

The network service will be presented by BBC news anchor Natasha Kaplinsky with regional presenting duties provided by BBC Midlands Today presenter Suzanne Virdee.

The corporation said that the aim was for, "the summary to be an extension to the news portfolio adding value to and widening the BBC's services and the number of people reached by them".

The news comes just weeks after main rival ITV1 vehemently denied press reports that it would be looking to bring back 'News at Ten' to compete with the BBC's own 10pm bulletin, which filled the gap after its commercial rival ditched its long running 'News at Ten' show.

The speculation also suggested that veteran broadcaster Sir Trevor McDonald would return to front the show, which was denied by ITV.
