BBC One sings on Saturday and sinks on Sunday

LONDON - BBC One won the talent search round of the ratings battle with ITV1 on Saturday but was comprehensively beaten on Sunday night as the new Stephen Fry legal drama 'Kingdom' debuted with 8.2m viewers, according to unofficial overnight figures.

On Saturday, after 'Doctor Who' comfortably beat 'Vernon Kay's Gameshow Marathon' by 6.3m to 3.8m, the channels went head to head with their current musical talent show formats.

After Andrew Lloyd Webber found the lead for 'The Sound of Music' last year through BBC One show 'How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?', the BBC and ITV each put new formats on screen this month.

BBC One is leading with its 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat' show 'Any Dream Will Do', which pulled in 5.3m viewers and a 26.9% share.

ITV1's 'Grease'-based effort, 'Grease is the Word', got 4.2m viewers and a 20.6% share.

However, BBC One bosses again had cause to blush for the channel's Sunday night performance, with eco drama 'Superstorm' again bombing at 9pm.

Having debuted last week with 3.8m viewers, the second episode brought in 3m yesterday and achieved a share of just 12.2% of the total viewing audience.

It was up against ITV1's debut of 'Kingdom', a crime drama starring Stephen Fry as unassuming Norfolk solicitor Peter Kingdom, which was watched by 8.2m and took a 34.1% share.

At 8pm, ITV1's dominance was even greater when 'The Royal' picked up 7.9m viewers and a 34.2% share and 'Play it Again' got 2.2m and a 9.3% share.
