BBC names childrens channels

LONDON - The BBC has announced the names of its £40m children's digital TV channels, calling its pre-school offering Cbeebies and giving its service for six- to 12-year-olds the more sophisticated title of CBBC Digital.

Cbeebies has been built around a four-hour schedule, which will broadcast pre-school favourites such as Teletubbies and Tweenies. These will be supplemented by original commissions such as Applecross, a new BBC Scotland series.

CBBC will broadcast some of the corporation's longest-running and most-famous children's brands such as Blue Peter, Grange Hill and Newsround. These will run alongside 50 hours of new commissions including an interactive show called Xchange; a 26-part drama called Cave Girl; and a hidden-camera show called Stitch Up.

The details were announced by CBBC controller Nigel Pickard. He said the Cbeebies brand had been well received by parents of pre-school children.
