BBC Magazines, part of BBC Worldwide, already has a firm hold on the teenage pop and celebrity magazine sector with Top of the Pops magazine and It's Hot, the teen celebrity title. In the pre-teen market, it publishes Girl Talk and Blue Peter magazines among others.
Popgirl, which launches on April 3, will capitalise on the current craze for pop acts, such as 'Pop Idol' stars Gareth Gates and Will Young, and 'Popstars: The Rivals' winners Girls Aloud, who are popular with young girls.
The magazine will contain 32 pages and provide everything girls need to emulate their favourite pop star. The magazine will publish words and dance steps to the latest pop songs, as well as fashion tips on how to dress like their favourite stars.
Each issue will include posters, interviews, gossip, news, pop profiles, reviews, comic strips, puzzles and competitions.
Jonathan Gifford, associate publisher at BBC Magazines, said: "BBC Magazines has a terrific heritage in defining the pop magazine market and Popgirl will extend our reach to include all ages from six to 16. We will be combining our expertise as the publisher of six pre-teen magazines with our unrivalled position in the pop magazine market to launch Popgirl and take our readers closer to their favourite stars."
The launch of Popgirl will be promoted in sister BBC magazines, including Girl Talk, and pushed at retail. Each issue of the new magazine will have a covermounted gift and a coverprice of 拢1.50.
