Although no official timetable has been set by the corporation for the branding shift, it is expected that the change could take more than a year to implement the phasing out of the News 24 brand.
The move is part of a strategy to create one brand across all the corporation's news programming on TV, radio and online.
The BBC is currently looking at the possibility of commercial activity across brands not covered by its public service remit, such as parts of its online service and BBC World, which broadcasts outside of the UK.
BBC News 24 launched in November 1997 to a muted response from critics who criticised the network for not having the gravitas of BBC News terrestrial's output. It also found itself consistently beaten by rival Sky News, although it has now surpassed the BSkyB news operation, which suffered a disastrous relaunch recently.
The network was often used as programming to fill a gap in scheduling on the BBC's channels, often late at night. Since being carried on the Freeview platform on channel 503 in July 2002, the network's profile has grown.
A spokeswoman for the BBC said: "We are looking at branding possibilities across the board for the network, but there is definitely no timetable set yet for any decisions to be made."
BBC News 24 won the Royal Television Society news channel of the year award this year, beating Sky News to the coveted prize.
The news of the future rebrand comes on the heels of news that Sky News has cut its Sky News Report and Sky World News Report with the loss of 17 staff from the channel. The move is understood to have cut £1m from Sky News' annual £35m budget.
