According to the Corporation鈥檚 annual report, published today, it earned 拢3.1bn in licence fee income for 2005/6, compared with 拢2.9bn the previous year.
At the same time, flagship channel BBC One鈥檚 audience share dipped by 1.5 percentage points to 22.9%. BBC Two also saw a slight decline, down from 9.6% to 9.4%.
Digital channels BBC Three and Cbeebies and the CBBC channel all managed to add 0.1 percentage point to their viewing share, while BBC Four and BBC News 24 remained stagnant on 0.2% and 0.4% respectively.
Chairman Michael Grade said: 鈥淭he BBC鈥檚 distinctiveness from the commercial sector must be evident in a willingness to take creative risks 鈥 even if that means the inevitable occasional failure.
鈥淏ut it also requires the confidence to end successful programmes that have reached the end of their natural creative life, to create space for the next round of innovation.鈥
This is the last BBC annual report that will be published by the Board of Governors, who will be replaced by the BBC Trust at the end of the year.
