BBC commits to mammoth digital platform ad push

The BBC has pledged to back its proposed free-to-air digital terrestrial TV platform with its "biggest ever marketing assault if its joint bid with Crown Castle and BSkyB is successful.

"We would pump in our heaviest activity ever for the launch of a digital terrestrial platform, but it would be very different to any advertising we've done before, said BBC marketing and communications director Andy Duncan.

He added that DFGW, the agency responsible for promoting the BBC's digital services, would be likely to play a role in promoting the platform, although the task remained open to fellow roster agencies Fallon and Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO.

The BBC/Crown Castle/ BSkyB proposition is one of four bids to run the UK's digital terrestrial TV licence following the collapse of ITV Digital. The other front-runner is a mixed pay-per-view/free-to-air bid from ITV and Channel 4. The other two bids remain under wraps.

The ITC is expected to award the licence on July 4.
