The appointment of Bainbridge, currently managing director of interactive group YooMedia's business-to-business arm, follows the BBC's restructure its marketing, communications and audiences division.
The BBC said the appointment reflected the importance the corporation placed on the future of digital services. Bainbridge will be responsible for driving the take-up of digital television and radio and the development of internet and broadband, centring on the bbc.co.uk sites.
He will report to Tim Davie, director of marketing, communications and audiences, and will be a key part of the BBC new-media management team led by Ashley Highfield, director of new media and technology.
Davie said: "David has an impressive record of achievement in the marketing, broadcast and new media sectors. He is the right person to lead marketing and communications for the BBC's Building Digital Britain ambitions, and I am delighted to have recruited a candidate of such outstanding calibre to join our strong BBC team."
Prior to YooMedia, Bainbridge was the founder of digital agency Whoosh, which was acquired by YooMedia. Before that he spent six years at Five, where he was a member of the launch team rising to become deputy marketing director. He had joined Five from BMP DDB where he began his career.
Bainbridge will join the BBC on May 2.
