Barclays retracts 'misleading' 0% forever material

Barclays Bank has agreed to withdraw advertising and marketing material promoting its '0% forever' credit card following a claim by the Office of Fair Trading that it is "highly misleading".

The move comes in the wake of the furore caused by the inability of Barclays chief executive Matthew Barrett to calculate the interest payable on the card in front of a Treasury Select Committee last month (Marketing, October 23).

The OFT held the advertising to be in breach of the Consumer Credit Act.

Although Barclays disputes this, it is withdrawing all relevant marketing material.

"We will change the wording of our advertising and marketing literature to make it more explicit for customers in terms of how the offer works," said Barclaycard chief executive Gary Hoffman.

The bank is currently removing literature from its UK branches and writing to affected card holders

Last month, Barclaycard handed its £6m ad business to Bartle Bogle Hegarty.
