Barclays extends sponsorship role to focus on sport

Barclays is boosting its sports sponsorship by promoting Nic Gault, who set up Barclaycard's backing of the Premiership, to a new group role.

Gault, Barclaycard's head of sponsorship, has been handed the job of sponsorship director across the entire Barclays group.

Reporting to marketing operations director Tim Kiy, Gault has been briefed to create a central sponsorship team. He is likely to recruit externally as well as from Barclaycard. Gault joined Barclaycard from Sun Micro-systems in 1995.

He will be responsible for managing the bank's £57m Premier League sponsorship deal, which comes into effect at the start of next season.

His responsibilities will also include the development of Barclays' other commercial sponsorships, such as the Global Challenge around-the-world yacht race and the Barclays Scottish Open golf tournament.

Barclays announced that it was taking over as the FA Premier League's title sponsor last year (Marketing, October 9 2003). The deal - the UK's biggest single sponsorship - will cost the bank £19m a year and will run until the end of the 2006-2007 season.
