Barclaycard to sponsor Premiership football for £48m

Barclaycard has paid £48m to become the new sponsor of Premier League Football, staving off competition from Vodafone and Siemens.

Barclaycard takes over from current sponsor Carling, which paid £33m for the package over three years. The contract will see Barclaycard promoted at Premiership matches in the 142 countries that receive TV coverage of the sport for the next three years.

Included in the deal is promotion for the British Tourism Authority in a bid to attract tourists to the UK following the outbreak of foot and mouth disease.

Barclaycard's contract, which eclipsed that paid by Carling for the last three year's sponsorship, is expected to reflect increased coverage for the new sponsor. This will include greater visibility, with more games televised next season including matches on a pay-per-view basis.

The league's programme highlights will be broadcast on ITV rather than the BBC, allowing for cross-promotional opportunities.
