Barclaycard debuts Flexi-Rate credit card

LONDON - Barclaycard is to become the first UK credit-card brand to offer reduced interest rates to customers who repay more than the minimum amount required each month on their outstanding balance.

The Flexi-Rate card will be backed by a TV campaign, which breaks on 9 October. The ads will be fronted by Stephen Mangan and Julian Rhind-Tutt, the stars of Channel 4 series Green Wing.

The work, by Bartle Bogle Hegarty, is intended to show how the card puts consumers in control.

Flexi-Rate cardholders can lower their interest rate by 4% if they pay off 5% of the balance or 7% if they repay at least 10%.

Rhind-Tutt and Mangan play friends driving across the US. Mangan's character keeps getting into trouble, while the more sensible Rhind-Tutt produces his Flexi-Rate card and reminds him of the control it offers.

Media planning and buying was handled by Walker Media. The TV activity will be supported by print ads.
