Baileys recreates 'The Nutcracker' ballet for sumptuous Christmas ad

A modern-day retelling of Tchaikovsky's 'The Nutcracker' ballet provides the theme for Baileys' Christmas ad.

The extravagant two-minute film tells the story of a girls’ night out at Christmas time. After arriving at a glamorous party, ‘Clara’ catches the eye of the ‘Nutcracker Prince’ and the pair begin to dance flirtatiously. However, the sinister ‘Mouse King’ also has sights set on Clara, and a thrilling dance sequence ensues as the men ‘fight’ over the woman.

Rather than sit back and watch, Clara joins in and rescues her preferred suitor before returning to party with her girlfriends. The film ends with the line: ‘Spend time with the girls this Christmas’.

The main parts in the ad are played by Steven McRae and Thiago Soares, both principal dancers with The Royal Ballet, and Iana Salenko, guest principal with The Royal Ballet.

Fittingly, the work will make its TV debut tomorrow (Saturday 16 November) during the UK television premiere of the Oscar-winning feature film, Black Swan. The psychological thriller set in the world of the New York City ballet and the ad were both choreographed by Benjamin Millepied, the world-renowned dancer and incoming director of the Paris Opera Ballet.
