BAA opens tender process for new airport media contracts

LONDON - Airport owner BAA has announced the opening of the tender process for new media contracts, following the termination of the £500m contract held by JCDecaux, despite uncertainty over the future ownership of a number of its airports.

Parties who would like to manage the media contracts at BAA airports will be able to register their interest with the company from mid-July.

The tender covers all BAA airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh, and the Heathrow Express train concession, with the new contracts beginning when the existing JCDecaux deal expires in May 2010.

Media companies will be able to register interest for one or more airports and the Heathrow Express, either as combined or separate deals. Parties will be invited to tender for multiple or individual media across the portfolio, including all out-of-home, television, experiential, promotional and sponsorship.

BAA will consider all companies who register interest and then invite a select number to complete the tender over a two-month period, with a view to awarding the contracts before the end of December 2009.

In March, the Competition Commission concluded BAA had to sell Gatwick and Stansted as well as either its Glasgow or Edinburgh airports.

In a statement, BAA said the sale of Gatwick, and potentially other airports, has no bearing on the airport media tender.

Companies will be able to apply online through www.airportsmart.com from 20 July.
