The group today (2 June) reported its quarterly results for the 13 weeks ending 30 April 2011.

In the 13 weeks to 30 April, group sales were up by 4.7% to £2.73bn, helped by the warm weather and the recent bank holidays, the company said.

In the UK and Ireland, where the company runs the B&Q chain, sales totalled £1.18m, up 1.8% on the year.

Retail profits in the UK were up 14.7% in the UK, coming in at £83m.

B&Q recently launched a TV campaign, created by McCann Erickson, featuring families enjoying DIY together, as part of its wider £6m marketing investment. The campaign began after the financial results period.

B&Q has 300 stores across the UK and Ireland, and employs around 30,000 people.

Commenting on the results, Ian Cheshire, group chief executive, said: "While we have got off to a good start, it remains our view that this year is likely to be a tough one for all retailers, especially in the UK. It is also likely that the early spring weather will have bought forward some of our outdoor seasonal sales."
