The Mirror boasted a 1.4% rise and The Sun kept its figures above the three million mark with a near 1% rise to 3,158,045.
A host of CD giveaways and the start of the football season also heralded a boost in sales for some of the Sundays, including the Daily Star Sunday (up 24%) and the News of the World (up 1.7%).
However, the mid-markets saw a sink in sales for the Daily Mail (down 2.5%), while the Mail on Sunday's sales dipped by 0.6%.
The Daily Mail's managing director, Guy Zitter, put the sales lull down to readers going on holiday and a "hugely successful" July thanks to its World At War DVD offer, which saw the paper sell an extra 150,000 copies per day.
The Evening Standard was up 0.9%, which was attributed to the paper's sampling campaign with new commercial partners.
The Daily Express, meanwhile, managed to reverse the downward mid-market trend, gaining sales in August with a 4.2% rise. But with an August sales figure of 2,339,278 copies, the Mail was still comfortably ahead of the Express on 827,491.
Thanks to last month's comedy, TV and film festivals and the Edinburgh Fringe, there was plenty to keep the Scottish papers occupied, as was reflected in the ABCs. Scotland on Sunday saw a rise of 19%; the Sunday Herald 8.1%; Sunday Mail 3.7%, and the Daily Record 2.8%.
