Athens 2004 protects its marketing with daily ambushes

LONDON - Athens 2004 will step up its battle against rogue advertisers by performing daily checks on marketing and products in the city to ensure they are officially licenced.

In the past two months, more than 100 businesses and shops throughout Greece have been checked and 100,000 pirated items have been confiscated.

Similar checks are being carried out on billboards and other outdoor media around Athens to ensure that advertisers are not piggy-backing on the back of the Olympics.

In the past, unofficial advertisers have done well out of attempting to associate themselves the games and other major sporting events without having to pay the huge fees that allow them to carry the Olympic rings.

More than 200 judicial motions have been enforced and provisional and protective measures have been implemented, as well as 20,000 products being seized.

The Organising Committee of the Olympic Games is working with state bodies including the Financial Crime Body, Hellenic Police and the Municipal Police to ensure the authenticity of all products before the Olympics begins on August 13.

Athens 2004 managing director, Ioannis Spanudakis, said: "In view of the upcoming Olympic Games we are intensifying our effort to protect the official Olympic products, in order to support Athens 2004 licensees."

He added: "Our main goal is to inform consumers, to enable them select the official products bearing the Athens 2004 trademarks and reduce illegal trade of non-official products to the minimum."
