Associated Irish chief joins News International

LONDON - Oliver Keenaghan, general manager of Associated Newspapers in Ireland, is joining rival news group News International to head up its Irish division.

Keenaghan, who takes up the new post on 7 January, will report to Paul Hayes, managing director of Times Newspapers.

Keenaghan, who has worked at Associated Newspapers for seven years, helped to oversee the launch of the Daily Mail in Ireland in 2006, and the launch of the Dublin edition of commuter freesheet Metro in 2005. During his tenure, Ireland on Sunday was also merged with The Mail on Sunday and was renamed The Irish Mail on Sunday.

Keenaghan told Media Week that a focus in his new role will be to deliver products more in line with the Irish market, leveraging NI's brand equity, and to improve circulation in the Irish market and generate more ad revenue from key products like The Sun.

Simon Davies, ad director for The Mail on Sunday, is to take on the role of general manager of Associated Newspapers in Ireland until a replacement for Keenaghan is found.
