ASA allows Ali G 'white paper' ad after complaints

The Advertising Standards Authority has rejected a complaint that a poster ad for the United Independent Pictures movie Ali G Indahouse was socially irresponsible because it encouraged young people to smoke cannabis.

The poster showed a head and shoulders photo of Ali G holding up two cigarette papers with clouds of smoke in the background, above the caption 'Me iz introducing a white paper. Ali G Indahouse'.

The ASA decided that people who understood the ads would be aware that the poster reflected Ali G's humorous character in the film, and those that didn't would be unlikely to be encouraged to smoke cannabis because of it.
