The match was to take place in the Nigerian capital of Abuja on 5 August and would have marked the first time Arsenal had played a West African nation.

Arsenal said it had cancelled the match because of difficulties in planning the game.

The club has a big following in Africa and is keen to grow its fan base further.

The Premiership football club has also signed sponsorship seal with regional brands such as Airtel and Malta Guinness.

To save face, it is now sending a quartet of players – Bacray Sagna, Lukas Podolski, Per Mertesacker and Thomas Rosicky, to the country on a meet-and-greet venture.

Vinai Venkatesham, Arsenal's head of global partnerships, on the club's official blog said: "We were disappointed to have to postpone the game and intend to visit Nigerian next summer.

"However we are delighted to be bringing this group of players to Nigeria to take part in events with our regional partners.

"It will give us a chance to engage with local supporters and reinforce our commitment to the market."
