The national platform carries Global Radio's Classic FM and TalkSport, Absolute Radio, BFBS Radio, Planet Rock, Fun Kids and Amazing Radio.

Also included in the deal is ownership of the company that operates Global Radio's local digital radio multiplexes, Now Digital, which includes Global's stake in MXR, the regional multiplex operator it co-owns with GMG Radio and UBC Media.

Ashley Tabor, Global's founder and group chief executive, said Arqiva and Global Radio have been working hard behind the scenes for many months on the deal and Global Radio is "leading the commercial radio industry in its drive to digital".

Tabor said the deal is a clear indication to government, Ofcom, consumers and advertisers of Global Radio's commitment to a Digital Britain, and while Global Radio is "aware of the challenges around the build out of coverage" of DAB this deal will go a long way to resolving many of these issues from commercial radio's perspective.
