Arculus's experience heading media companies put him in the frame to replace Sir Victor Blank, who is leaving Trintiy Mirror in May. However, having joined the owner of the Financial Times and Penguin Books, Arculus is unlikely to take up the chair of Trinity Mirror.
Arculus has previously been group managing director of Emap, chief operating officer of United Business Media and chairman of IPC.
Meanwhile another candidate, Sir John Parker, is being tipped for the Trinity Mirror post.
Parker is stepping down as chairman of FTSE 100 company P&O once its sale to Dubai Ports World is complete, and is also chairman of another FTSE 100 company National Grid.
Recent rules recommending no one should hold more than one FTSE 100 chairmanship mean he is likely to take a chairmanship at a FTSE 250 company, such as Trinity Mirror.
Pearson has also appointed a second non-executive director. Ken Hydon was previously finance director of Vodafone and is also a non-executive director of Tesco and Reckitt Benckiser.
