Appointment: ASA puts Sport Newspapers in the dock at OFT

Sport Newspapers has been referred to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) in a move that could see the publisher prosecuted under the Control of Misleading Advertisements Regulations Act.

The move follows complaints received by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) on an October 2003 front page flash on the Daily Sport reading "Daily Sport 10p Today". This referred to a magazine offer within the newspaper, with the paper actually costing 40p.

In March this year the ASA upheld the complaint, but Sport Newspapers refused to sign an assurance it would comply with the ruling. A similar promotion ran in the Sunday Sport in May.
