'Anti-social' Sony ad banned despite humorous defence

LONDON - An advertisement for a Sony car stereo, which boasted the volume could be pumped up enough to shatter greenhouses, has been banned after a complaint that it condoned anti-social behaviour.

'Anti-social' Sony ad banned despite humorous defence

The ad, created by Fallon for Sony Xplod P5 car amplifier and subwoofers, bragged: "Maybe you like your music to be relaxing. Or maybe you like to shatter greenhouses and set off car alarms".

It went on to point out that with 1000W of power, "you're not going to be the only one hearing it".

A member of the public from Bedfordshire complained about the ad, which appeared in Car magazine, saying it encouraged drivers to play loud music in their cars without consideration for others and therefore condoned irresponsible behaviour.

The Advertising Standards Authority upheld the complaint, despite Sony's arguments that the ad appealed to the target audience and that the copy was written tongue in cheek and not intended to be taken literally.

The advertising watchdog has asked Sony not to repeat the approach.
