The America's Cup, the international sailing contest, is ramping up sponsorship and commercial opportunities by introducing an annual series.

The 34th America's Cup will take place in 2013. The last of the irregularly-held contests was in 2010 and marred by legal battles between the two teams.

The organisers are introducing the America's World Cup series, an annual event starting in 2011, and the Youth America’s Cup, to launch in 2012, which will provide sponsorship opportunities spread over the whole year.

In addition, the organisers will put cameramen onboard boats to film the race and stream the action live.

The aim is to widen the audience of the competition by racing in new countries, while it also hopes to engage with a younger generation of sailors, making the Cup itself a more accessible trophy.

In a ploy to attract new audiences, the regatta has purchased the fastest boat in the world, the AC72, a new high-performance catamaran with wingsail.

Russell Coutts, CEO of race organiser BMW Oracle Racing, said: "We believe this new format and new boat will put the America's Cup back at the pinnacle of our sport.

"These changes will give equal opportunity to competitors and long term economic stability to all teams and commercial partners.

"During our six months of planning we spoke to the teams, to commercial partners, to media and to the fans. A clear and compelling vision emerged – that to capture and communicate the excitement our sport can produce, we need the best sailors racing the fastest boat in the world."
