Amazon sales up 51% to nearly $10bn in Q2

Amazon has achieved its biggest growth in a decade with net sales up 51% to $9.9bn (£6bn) for the second quarter of 2010, partly driven by sales of its Kindle reader device.

While the ecommerce giant has seen a surge in sales for the three months ended 30 June 2010, net income dipped 8% to $191m.

It said sales of Kindle devices accelerated in the second quarter of 2011, compared to the first quarter of 2011.

It did not provide specific details of Kindle sales but sales of electronics and other merchandise were $5.9bn while media accounted for $3.7bn of total net sales for the quarter.

Jeff Bezos, founder and chief executive of Amazon, said: "Low prices, expanding selection, fast delivery and innovation are driving the fastest growth we’ve seen in over a decade."

It was recently reported that , running on Google's Android operating system, in October this year.
