Amazon Europe marketer leaves to form DM shop

Amazon.com's top European marketer Gavin Wheeler has quit after just a year to set up a direct marketing agency.

Wheeler joined Amazon from NTL last November to be European head of customer relationship management and deployed a CRM strategy to run across the UK, Germany and France. He has left to form Wheeler Direct Marketing Partnership, with Johnson & Johnson MSD Consumer Pharmaceuticals as a launch client.

He has been replaced internally by Veronique Cornu, who previously handled the company's CRM activities in Germany. Customer insights and relationship marketing are the cornerstone of the online retailer's business and form the bulk of its marketing activity. The company has 11 million customers across its three European territories.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos staked out his intentions earlier this month to expand the book and entertainment retailer's offering to include household products such as kitchen equipment and crockery.

Amazon's global advertising account is held by Wieden & Kennedy with UK media planned and bought by OMD UK. Amazon axed the role of European marketing director Tom Allchurch earlier this year (Marketing, March 7).
