Al Jazeera site is attacked after American POW images

LONDON - Hackers are venting their spleen on Arab satellite news network Al Jazeera and have attacked the station's website after it caused widespread outrage with its broadcast of pictures of dead and captured American troops.

The attack follows yesterday's launch of an English-language version of Al Jazeera's site. The English-language site, , has been hard hit by the attacks and has been temporarily unavailable since its launch.

The site has been featuring stories on the Iraqi fight against coalition forces and other hostile and critical stories, despite proclaiming itself to be offering "objective and balanced global news coverage and analysis".

According to a spokesman for Al Jazeera's web hosting company, the servers for the site are based in France and the USA, but as the attacks began on Tuesday morning only the US servers were attacked, prompting him to believe that the attacks originated in the US.

Al Jazeera is currently working to get the site back up and running, but has no idea when it will be fully functioning again.
