Al Jazeera eyes US as it reaches 100m viewers

LONDON - Al Jazeera's English-language television news channel has hit 100m homes globally and is stepping up its plans to take on the US market with the appointment of a director of global distribution.

The group has appointed Phil Lawrie, previously vice-president of commercial distribution and digital media at Turner Broadcasting System, to the newly created role.

The appointment comes as the English -language version of the Arab news station celebrates achieving a global footprint of 100m homes just one year after launch.

In his previous role, Lawrie was responsible for profit and loss in the commercial and advertising sales department at TBS's London office. The department worked across channels including CNN, Cartoon Network and Boomerang.

Lawrie will report to Abdullah Al Najjar, commercial director of Al Jazeera Network, who said: "The US, as well as India and China, represent the next stage in our global distribution efforts.

"These are sophisticated markets that have a need and desire for international news, and I am delighted that someone as experienced, creative and passionate as Phil is leading the change."

Al Jazeera was launched just over 10 years ago as a satellite news channel for the Arab world, and is now carried by major cable and satellite operators across the globe. It is headquartered in Qatar and is state owned.

Since launch, the brand has grown into a network encompassing Arabic and English versions, a documentary channel and four sports channels. It built its reputation covering Al Qaeda and is known for broadcasting messages from Osama bin Laden.

Lawrie said: "The Al Jazeera brand is an international phenomenon whose reputation for courageous reporting precedes it, and for almost a year Al Jazeera English has been setting the news agenda by reporting form under-represented corners of the world."
