The airport, which has the second-highest proportion of business traffic in the UK behind Heathrow, has put out a tender notice to media agencies. The deadline for submissions is the end of this month.
It is understood the airport does not have an incumbent media agency. Clear Channel Outdoor holds the outdoor contract, while McCann Erickson Advertising handles creative duties. Both firms are unaffected by the review.
The review follows a pitch for the £1.7m Manchester Airports Group media account last year, which was awarded to MediaVest Manchester in November.
Birmingham International is the UK’s sixth-largest airport and third largest for charter traffic. In 2006, it handled more than nine million passengers at its two terminals.
More than 50 airlines operate scheduled and charter services to over 100 destinations, including daily departures to New York and a twice-daily service to Dubai.
The airport also markets itself as the Midlands’ low-cost capital, served by seven low-cost carriers, including Flybe, Ryanair and Aer Lingus.
Birmingham International did not return calls at the time of going to press.
