Airbnb devises underwater bedroom experience with sharks

Airbnb has teamed up with Aquarium de Paris to offer consumers the chance to sleep amongst 35 sharks in an underwater bedroom.

Located in the aquarium’s shark tank, the fully submerged bedroom is available for three competition winners and a guest of their choosing to experience for one night each, commencing on 11 April.

The experience will include an aquarium tour and educational element about sharks, hosted by a marine biologist from Aquarium de Paris and world record-breaking free diver, underwater photographer and shark conservationist Fred Buyle, as well as a tank-side meal.

Guests will then head to bed, where the only thing separating them from the creatures will be a 360-degree transparent wall.

To secure a one-night stay within the space, consumers are required to visit its dedicated Airbnb listing, at which point they will be prompted to provide information about themselves, their location, and explain why they are fit for a night with the sharks on or before 3 April. Those not residing in Paris will be flown to the aquarium from anywhere in the world.

The experience aims to transform peoples’ misconceptions about sharks, by offering winners the chance to learn about how they live and their role in the ocean’s ecosystem.

Olivier Grémillon, managing director EMEA at Airbnb said: "We’ve seen cable cars, former airplanes and even the top of a ski jump listed on Airbnb, but this is really unlike anything we’ve ever seen before on the site.

"Whether you have a passion for sharks or a shark phobia, this will not only be a once-in-a-lifetime, magical experience, it will also be a chance to change the way you think about these beautiful creatures."

Alexis L. Powilewicz, CEO at Aquarium de Paris added: "We’re thrilled to be the first aquarium in the world to offer this chance for people to be more than simply visitors, but to get such an immersive experience."
