Air Ambulance to lose sponsor

Express Newspapers is extending its cost-cutting drive by

withdrawing its sponsorship of London’s Air Ambulance and putting the

helicopter up for sale.

The newspaper group bought the helicopter in the early 80s and helped

fund its running costs. The cost of the medical crew is met by the

National Health Service.

The Royal Hospitals Trust in East London, where the helicopter is based,

has been offered first option on the helicopter and is now seeking a

sponsor to help meet the pounds 850,000 asking price.

The new sponsor will be able to replace the Express branding on the

helicopter in return for helping to fund the service.

The helicopter is used to carry a doctor to accidents and is used up to

four times a day in urgent cases.

A spokesman for the trust said it is negotiating with interested

sponsors.

’The Air Ambulance is high-profile and part of London life. Its work

often features in TV news reports. We believe it offers brands a real

opportunity for positive sponsorship.’
