The Cool Brand Leaders has been compiled by The Brand Council and a panel that includes such people as: Alexandra Shulman, editor of Vogue; Rankin, the photographer; Daniel Barton, head of marketing at Diesel; and Darren Thomas, managing director of Cake.
The panel decided that the coolest ad of the year was Honda Accord's "cog", created by Wieden & Kennedy London, closely followed by TBWA\London's John Smith's campaign and the Vauxhall Corsa "hide and seek" ads, created by Delaney Lund Knox Warren & Partners.
The "cog" commercial was also the most talked about ad, beating John Smith's again and the Sprite "goblin".
Other brands deemed cool include Coca-Cola, which beat off Moet et Chandon and Dom Perignon as the coolest drink brand, and MTV, the top media and entertainment brand.
The Tate beat places like the Ibizan nightclub Manumission to be named the coolest place, with the British Airways London Eye coming second in the category.
VW Beetle won the coolest vehicle category beating Audi, Jaguar, Ducati and Smart. The Beetle also won the coolest design category, beating Bang & Oulfsen, Jaguar, Sony and the BA London Eye.
The coolest media and entertainment brand went to MTV, which just edged out Microsoft's Xbox and Scalextric.
Marcel Knobil, chairman of the Cool Brand Leaders judging panel, said: "Cool credentials are so critical to numerous brands. Recent research revealed that over half of people are willing to pay more for a brand because it's cool. Yet attaining and maintaining cool status is a phenomenally difficult challenge."
There are some surprise findings in the survey, such as Conservative politician Ann Widdecombe's appearance on the list of the five coolest politicians and the Queen being named one of the five coolest women over the age of 50, along with former Bond girl Honor Blackman.
David Beckham is named among the coolest celebrities, but also appears with his wife Victoria on the list of the least cool, where he is joined by Jordan, Chris Evans and the 'Big Brother' contestants.
