Aegis set to continue industry outperformance

LONDON - Aegis, the home of media buying groups Carat and Vizeum, said it was on track to outperform the market this financial year on the back of a strong new business performance, a bigger presence in emerging markets and the growth of its digital services.

The media buying, digital marketing and market research group reported first-quarter organic revenue growth of 8.5% since 2006. The group's organic growth was 7.7% in 2006.

The group said it had started 2007 well and saw healthy prospects for both the advertising and market research industries. It claimed: "Aegis continues to achieve the fastest organic revenue growth of any major marketing services group."

The update comes as the company's shareholders convene for the latest vote on whether majority shareholder Vincent Bollore should be given board seats at its AGM this morning.

Two weeks ago Aegis chief executive, Robert Lerwill, restated the group's opposition to demands from Bollore for two board seats because of the conflict of interest with his position as chairman of rival group Havas.

Lerwill said he expected the group's shareholders to reject Bollore's two candidates for a fourth time later today.

Shareholders have rejected the Havas chairman's nominees, Philippe Germond and Roger Hatchuel, three times because of conflict of interest.

Organic revenue growth at its Aegis Media division was 8.4% for the quarter, with momentum particularly strong in both Asia-Pacific and Europe, the Middle East and Africa regions.

Aegis said China was a particularly buoyant market and the effect of a record $2.7bn of net new business won in 2006 was also driving organic growth.

New business wins included the international brief for 20th Century Fox as well as Citroen in Sweden and Opodo in Germany. In April, Carat successfully repitched the global Philips account.

Its Synovate division performed slightly better, notching up organic revenue growth of 8.7% and making a strong start to the year in the Americas and Asia-Pacific.

Digital services provided by the group's Isobar network continued to be the fastest growing part of the business. In March, Isobar was recognised as the world's largest digital network by research group RECMA.
