De Nardis, 44, is currently the global chief executive of Mediaedge:cia and is still negotiating a leaving date from WPP. He has spent 19 years in media, first as the deputy chairman of the Italian agency Media Network, and then as the chief executive of CIA across Europe before its acquisition by WPP. He was then made the chief executive of Mediaedge:cia.
De Nardis said that he was attracted by Aegis' entrepreneurial approach: "It is very proactive and focused. Aegis Media is the largest part of the plc, so will be at the forefront of developments."
Aegis, the subject of fevered takeover speculation, has also appointed de Nardis to its plc board. He will report to the group chief executive, Robert Lerwill.
Lerwill said: "Mainardo brings a wealth of experience to us."
