Advertising slump hits expenses at the Financial Times

LONDON - The Financial Times has clamped down on expenses in a bid to limit the damage to the paper from falling advertising revenues.

Journalists have been banned from taking contacts out to lunches -- a huge source of stories for the newspaper -- while business trips are being reined in. Department heads have also been told they can not sign off expenses sheets.

The cutbacks have been implemented in an attempt to save £500,000 on expenses. However, the move has angered staff because the company is holding an management gathering at one of London's top hotels this week, costing an estimated £100,000.

The cutbacks, which were communicated to staff last week in a memo, will last until the end of the year.
