Adidas readies retail expansion to take fight to Nike

LONDON - Adidas is taking on Nike with plans to increase its retail presence by opening its first three London stores.

The sports brand will open an Originals-branded store close to Covent Garden next month. It will compete with retro rivals such as Puma and Gola. In November, it will open its first megastore and flagship presence on Oxford Street, close to Niketown, under its Performance brand.

A third store, which will be situated in Soho, is believed to be a hybrid retail and concept store to cross-promote Adidas' advertising, sponsorship and event-based marketing initiatives.

Nike is also considering expansion, with a national roll-out of its Niketown store.

Separately, Adidas has unveiled the next phase of its "Impossible is Nothing" ad campaign, which will back its involvement in the Athens Olympic Games next month.
